Blogging Assignment 6

The most useful approach to use in critically analyzing The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway is Santiago as a Christ Figure.
There are situations of Christ Figure in the OMS. One of the expressed situations of Christ is when the old man carried with the bleached bones of the fish on his back, it is similar situation with Jesus Christ who carried the cross on his back. This part describes Santigo as a Christ Figure. Moreover, when the boy had gone to his parents after forty days, the number of this related with the Resurrection.
By the way, there is also some symboles of Christ. For example, the dolphin, fish, and the sea are relation with Christ. The story centers round on these symbols, especially the fish that Santiago pursued it. According to the lecture, the dolphin and the fish is expressed the general idea of Christ, and the sea is expressed the mother of human being or of Jesus Christ.
In short, the Old Man and the Sea is hidden the expression of Christ figure from all parts of the story.

Blogging Assignment 5

The main characters in Old Man and the Sea are Santiago, a fisherman and Manolin, a boy who helps him. Three adjectives that describe Santiago are lonely, ardent and stubborn.

At first, Santiago is lonely. This is because in according to the text, it said "These were relics of his wife. Once there had been a tinted photograph of his wife on the wall but he had taken it down because it made him too lonely~".(page 16, line 2-6) This sentence made me sad and painful. Actually, there are some people of his surrounding, like Maolin and fisherman. However, I think he feels loneliness when he had lost his wife. No one can take his wife place. Secondly, he is really ardent man I think. According to the text, it said "Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated." (page 10, line 6-8)I feel his eager desire for the sea and fishing from this sentence. Finally, he is stubborn. The reason why he is like that because he never give up fishing for totally eighty four days. Moreover, he is always eager to be lonely and adopt an attitude of detachment toward other people although Manolin and some fisherman worried about him. This source is written in the text page 1.

Two adjectives that describe Manolin are innocent and longing. I think Manolin is innocent and longing boy. This is because I point out these adjectives from the whole of Manolin's saying. For example in the text, he often calls "Santiago". This word is often used in the text, and I think it is an effective expression of childlike saying. Moreover, according to the text, "Can I go out to get sardines for you tomorrow?"(page 12, line 7)and "May I get the sardines? I know where I can get four baits too." (page 10-11)I think these saying expresses his longing to Santiago. He loves Santiago because he never give up fishing, so I think he would like to cheer up beside him.

How do "good" colleage teachers present information?

According to Meiland, a "good" college teacher presents information in the following way.It is written at page 4 that good college teachers usually present some information "what is currently believed." And they are talking lots about the basis on which information is currently believed. Moreover, they are concerned not only with imparting information but also to present and exam the basis on which information is or should be believed. In point of fact, currently believed is the basis on some discussion and examining.

Actually, I think they and we need to know about that. The reason why currently believed need to because if we don't have any knowledge about that, we cannot discuss something with critical thinking.

However, I wonder whether it is good thing that we are presented merely currently information. Of course, there isn't written anywhere like "just" or "merely" in Meiland, but I think maybe they present almost that. My opinion is not only currently believed but also the other believed should be paid attention to. College student is expected to consider some matters from various point of view. Therefore, I think we should know more various believed to be able to have a wide outlook and critical thinking.
